This piece started with the idea to create a series of off-centre lines inspired by Kirkstone Pass in the Lake District. As the work unfolded, I felt the skyline would look better less angular...more U than V. I added in the slate layer and instantly loved the extra depth and detail; it became the cove.
Painting intuiatively in this way is a constant surrender of how I think the painting should go, and flowing with what evolves in the moment. This has become one of my favourite pieces in the collection.
